Laab im Walde began modernizing the pumping station and large-scale fibre-optic expansion many years ago. Today, all citizens have fast Internet at home. The mayor has a clear vision: In future, everyone will be able to use their laptop, mobile phone or tablet to see which resources, such as water or electricity, the municipality is using. An internal community “dashboard” should display the most important information and consumption.
Laab im Walde has been using various automation solutions in the infrastructure sector for a long time.
Control and visualization were renewed. The technology (road distributor, lighting, remote monitoring) was renovated with an S7 controller (S7-1200 including communication processors, Scalance Switches, WinCC). It is particularly important to the mayor that the entire technical infrastructure is resistant to blackouts and is not dependent on the network.
The drinking water network was automated together with Siemens and equipped with WinCC V7 and S7-1200, which, among other things, allows leaks to be detected at an early stage. WinCC V7 serves as a scalable process visualization system (SCADA system) with numerous powerful functions for monitoring automated processes and S7-1200 as a controller with integrated communication technology to perform automation tasks flexibly and efficiently.
Laab im Walde is taking bold steps forward and using cutting-edge technology to connect the various areas. The municipality is a digitization hotspot in the Vienna Woods and an example for other municipalities.
