Boehringer Ingelheim LSCC

Pharma
December 2021
Participation as an external automation engineer in the construction of the new biopharmaceutical LSCC plant (Large-Scale Cell Culture) at Boehringer Ingelheim in Vienna-Meidling. In addition to medicines from Boehringer Ingelheim, this plant also produces drugs for other pharmaceutical companies. At the Vienna site, biopharmaceuticals are manufactured from both microorganisms and cell cultures.

Requirements

The following requirements were met:

  • Support of automation systems and their infrastructure in biotechnological production in Vienna
  • Handling of automation projects
  • coordination by internal and external personnel (integration and monitoring of system manufacturers during updates, distribution of tasks to partner companies)
  • Carrying out the work in compliance with GxP guidelines
  • IT/server infrastructure maintenance
  • Monitoring and elimination of sources of interference in the entire plant network

Honeywell Smart Glasses

Honeywell Smart Glasses were specially configured for use in the cell culture system (LSCC).
These smart glasses enable remote collaboration with 24/7 technical support to significantly reduce downtime.

The latest generation of augmented reality smart glasses offer hands-free technology that includes live video, audio, augmented reality overlays, and secure network features.

By wearing these smart glasses, live images can be transmitted to remote support to quickly diagnose and fix critical issues. Instead of initiating a service call, remote support can see exactly what challenges technical staff are facing in real time. This makes it possible to repair machines promptly and restore operational readiness.

Development of the IT infrastructure control system

The control systems show the production processes for the individual plant components on which the clients are built. Staff can log on to the control system with their access card in order to carry out process-relevant activities.

  • Setting up the login terminal for access cards for staff working in the plant
  • Configuration and setup of the handheld scanner to quickly scan the product labels into the control system

This means that the audit trail always makes it possible to see exactly who carried out which process, at what point in time.
